Let the Sun Shine on the Breast of Beauties: Vitamin D Deficiency in Breast Cancer Patients (especially women of color)

OK... so they tell us to wear sunscreen to prevent sunburn, but the sun actually nourishes our body with Vitamin D... NATURALLY! So isn't it amazing that researchers from the University of South Carolina made a presentation at the 3rd American Association for Cancer Research Conference on the Science of Cancer Health Dsiparities in Miami. According to their research, Vitamin D deficiency may actually contribute the developmen of breast cancer.
The researchers at University South Cacalacki measured Vitamin D levels in 107 women who had received a breast cancer diagnosis within the past five years. Not only was Vitamin D deficiency widespread among the participants, but lower levels of the vitamin were also significantly correlated with triple-negative breast cancer.
I have never heard this term before, triple negative breast cancer, but it appears that this particular cancer is the most aggressive and hardest to treat form of the dis-ease as it is unresponsive to all the most conventional effective drugs. The researchers found that it was eight times more common in women with Vitamin D difeciency than in those with adequate levels of the vitamin.
A population study based on the California Cancer Registry found that women who were diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer were likely to be under the age of 40, Black or Hispanic, and were living at a low socioeconomic status. Their cancers were more aggressive than estrogen-receptor positive tumors, and were diagnosed at a later stage of the disease. In the five years after treatment, risk of recurrence was high.

Typically, darker skin acts somewhat as a block to producing Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, which is the primary source of Vitamin D in most people. Only 15 percent of white women in the study had low levels of Vitamin D deficiency, 60 percent of black / brown skin participants had insufficient levels.

"[The study] corroborates other research showing racial differences in Vitamin D status and provides further support for a protective role of Vitamin D in breast cancer," the researchers wrote.

As more evidence of Vitamin D's role in disease prevention has emerged in recent years, health experts have become increasingly alarmed at the widespread levels of deficiency across the United States.

"Vitamin D deficiency is epidemic in America, and it contributes not only to the development of osteoporosis but to increased cancer and heart disease as well," writes Joel Fuhrman in his book Cholesterol Protection for Life.

Personally I have found one of the best supplements for Vitamin D intake is with Nordic Naturals. Yes, it is a fish oil supplement, but they have a line that is a pharmecuetical grade that provides a great dose of Vitamin D that will support your body with better absorption of your calcium intake as well as regulate your immune system and increase your cardiovascular health. Check it out for yourself http://www.nordicnaturals.com/en/Products/Product_Details/154/?ProdID=1517
The AMA and FDA will tell you that you can get a strong dose of your Vitamin D from cow's milk. If you knew what I know, you might think twice about it: http://curezone.com/foods/milk.asp

Promising Pomegranate Prostate Possibilities!

One of the most dreaded consequences of cancer is when the disease metastasizes -- meaning it spreads from the primary site where it started to other parts of the body. But University of California, Riverside (UCR) scientists have announced what could be a major breakthrough in halting metastasis. They've discovered components in the juice of Indian Apples (aka Pomegranate) that inhibit the movement of cancer cells and weaken the attraction of malignant cells to a chemical signal that has been shown to promote metastasis.

Specifically, the research team found that pomegranate juice seems to block the spread of prostate cancer i(in particular) cells to the bone. The group is planning additional tests to determine the effects of various doses of the natural pomegranate compounds and whether there are any side effects.

Concentration of pomegranate juice was used on two types of laboratory-cultured prostate cancer cells that were resistant to the male hormone testosterone. Medical science has known for a while that when cancerous cells are resistant to testosterone, that it's an indicator those cells have a strong potential to metastasize. Not only did the research team find pomegranate juice killed many cancer tumor cells -- the pomegranate juice treatment also increased cell adhesion and decreased cell migration in those cancer cells that had not died.

When the scientists analyzed the pomegranate juice to figure out which specific ingredients produced the molecular impact on cell adhesion and migration in metastatic prostate cancer cells, Dr. Martins-Green, graduate student Lei Wang and undergraduate student Jeffrey Ho discovered phenylpropanoids, hydrobenzoic acids, flavones and conjugated fatty acids.

"This is particularly exciting because we can now modify these naturally occurring components of the juice to improve their functions and make them more effective in preventing prostate cancer metastasis," Dr. Martins-Green said in a media statement."Because the genes and proteins involved in movement of prostate cancer cells are essentially the same as those involved in movement of other types of cancer cells, the same modified components of the juice could have a much broader impact in cancer treatment."

The idea that pomegranates have an anti-cancer effect isn't new. In fact, evidence has been steadily accumulating over the past few years that along with other health benefits (such as soothing inflammation in the body (this is where Omega Fatty Acids come in handy) and potentially reducing the risk of heart disease) pomegranates have been strongly shown to prevent and/or treat cancer. For example, earlier in 2010, NaturalNews reported on a study published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research showing that phytochemicals known as ellagitannins found in pomegranate fruit could prevent the development of hormone-dependent breast cancer and halt the growth of estrogen-driven tumors.

In addition, in a 2006 study of prostate cancer patients who drank eight ounces of pomegranate juice every day, UCLA researchers found a decline in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels that suggested a potential slowing of cancer progression. More recently, the results of a long-term study published in the Journal of Urology concluded pomegranate juice may effectively slow the progression of prostate cancer, even when regular treatment has failed.

However, despite all the science showing pomegranate juice could have anti-cancer effects, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has come down hard on claims about those potential benefits. In Sept. 2010, the FTC filed a lawsuit against Pom Wonderful, the natural foods company that provided the pomegranate juice for the UCLA research and has supported other research on pomegranate juice, charging the company's claims about the juice's health benefits were misleading.

HPV vaccine approved for anal cancer

Full story: CNN Money

Gardasil , the human papillomavirus vaccine approved in 2006 to prevent cervical cancer got the green light Wednesday by the Food and Drug Administration for use in preventing anal cancer and other precancerous lesions caused by the virus.

Nothing about the FDA or AMA even remotely surprise me anymore. So now Gardasil has been approved for anal cancer? Seriously? With all of the numerous reports of girls and young women that have experienced adverse affects from this drug, they still find it necessary to go even a step further.

If you pay close attention to the demographic of the which the advertising is positioned you will notice that it is intended for those that are among the lower rungs of the economic ladder. Now amazingly enough, because of the economic trial we are experiencing, there are numerous people that are now on the lower rungs of the ladder, but with one teeny weeny difference. They Understand/Know Better. They have been exposed to information that can help them to make powerful decision about how they want to and need to care for their health.

This, sad to say, is just a process of elimination by genecide of the ignorant and blantenly self righteously stupid.

Until we take responsibility for our own health and well being, "they" will continue what is good for you and want is not good for you and like mindless herded sheep, you will follow.

Thre are numerous avenues of information from the Health Ranger to The Issels Foundation (for those that are dealing with advanced stages of cancer).

Ultimately people YOU are responsible for your health. Your ill choice of diet, lack of exercise and alkalizing water...oh and those sorid harbour of nasty emotions (anger / hate / jealousy / even stress) all contribute to the creation you so readily have manifested. Instead of figuring out how you got yourself into the mess your in you run to the nearest white lab coat with a stethoscope and say, "Doc, I know I screwed up my health with my mindless lifestyle, but here... you fix me."

Ok, that's my rant for the day. This has been a Mad Monolouge by Madison Carlista.
